A royal charter was granted by Henry III
To hold a weekly street market and annual fair
The honourable king was as good as his word
Town Folk could then sell their ware
Some famous people named in the town
Robert Clive and Sir Roland Hill are just two
Clive climbed the church tower and wouldn't come down
So I've read causing quite a to-do
Sixteen fifty-one was the year of the fire
A terrible destructive blaze
For the town folk and villagers the effect was quite dire
They were heart wrenching, miserable days
In true "Draitune" spirit as in Domesday Book
The locals rallied and got through their plight
No matter the blaze and the buildings it took
They rebuilt using all of their might
This town and its history and market as well
The canal that runs right by its side
It's the place my ancestors did happily dwell
It's my home, one I think of with pride
